Soundings from the Estuary: Frank Watson

Frank Watson is a senior lecturer at Westminster University and photographic artist. He has recently published a photographic book entitled 'Soundings from the Estuary' with an essay by Jonathan Meades.

His photographic practice deals with the spatial relationship between landscape and architecture. He has published 'The Hush House: Cold War Sites in England' that considered the legacy of Cold War architecture in E. Anglia.

His research has also dealt with the relationship between sound and photography that included working with sound artist Dave Lawrence on a project entitled 'Isles of Grain' He has curated exhibitions as part of the London Festival of Architecture and other group shows.

The work on show at the Francesa Maffeo Gallery - as part of Southend Charabanc weekend - will consist of a pop up display of prints from the Soundings from the Estuary book. The project involved a series of walks over a seven year period examining the Thames Estuary.

The images reflect both the maritime and industrial past as well as future effects of global warming upon the estuary's topography. Copies of the book and prints will be for sale and there will be a talk by the artist about his working practice.
