INTIMATE PHOTOGRAPHS OF DAVID BOWIE TRAVELLING AROUND THE WORLD
By Josh Saunders
Rarely seen intimate photographs of the late David Bowie document a school friend’s THREE-YEAR PARTY with the star as they travelled around the world.
The relaxed images show some relaxed and rare-off screen moments with the ‘Starman’ singer during the era of his re-emergence as the whacky and flamboyant alter-ego Ziggy Stardust.
The Geoff MacCormack Collection is being exhibited and shows the pair travelling between 1973 and 1976, after he was asked to be a backing singer, percussionist and dancer for Bowie.
The infamous showman, born David Robert Jones, has pictured everywhere from Siberia to New Mexico, Los Angeles, Hollywood and more.
The Rockstar who flaunts red hair for several on the images, is caught unguarded and real, in the exhibition that appears like a ‘family photo album’ of ‘holiday snaps’.
Geoff described the time travelling with pal flight-phobic Bowie, as like a ‘the party that lasted for three years’, in which he documented their friendship in the endearingly candid images.
They are on show at the Francesca Maffeo Gallery, in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, from March 24 – April 14.
It will mark over two-years since the tragic loss when the Man Who Fell To Earth departed this world.
Geoff MacCormack commented on his time: “Just suppose your Brilliant Pal said: ‘Will you join my band [The Spiders from Mars] and come on a tour? And would you mind awfully if we travelled [first class] by sea to New York, and then sailed from Los Angeles to San Francisco, Canada, Hawaii and on to Japan? And then, from Japan to Siberia, through Russia [Trans-Siberian Express] to Moscow [for May Day Parade], Poland, East and West Germany, just in time for tea at the George V Hotel in Paris? Followed by a relaxing holiday in Rome, just to chill out?’
“And then, just suppose, when you thought all the fun had finished, your Brilliant Pal said: ‘Would you mind being a dog [Diamond], coming back to New York on an even better ship, eating caviar every day and joining another band, then another band, helping out on a few albums [six], and generally hanging out and having the time of your life for a couple more years?’
“Supposing all that happened…Wouldn’t it be fantastic to have kept a photo or two?”
